Truro City Swimmers Sprint to Success in Gloucester

Sunday saw the final Southwest Regional Championship of the season being held at the G1 Leisure Centre in Gloucester. The event often referred to by the swimmers as “the Gloucester sprints” is favourite end of season meet which sees many regional qualifying swimmers from the Southwest Counties competing across the age groups to become the 50m sprint champion.

Truro City had a small representation as 10 swimmers made the Journey:

  • Nicholas Laws (Boys 11 years Age Group)

  • Robyn Edwards (Girls 12 years Age Group)

  • George Hollis  (Boys 14 years Age Group)

  • Holly Abrahams  (Girls 14 years Age Group)

  • Luc Hesdon (Boys 15 years Age Group)

  • Luke Hollis  (Boys 16 years Age Group)

  • Josie Williams  (Girls 16 years Age Group)

  • Mesha Wardman  (Girls 16 years Age Group)

  • Charlie Middleton  (Boys 17/OV Age Group)

  • Jack Middleton  (Boys 17/OV  Age Group)


Some swimmers had travelled up the night before and were afforded a lie in before the 10am warmup, others who set off in the early hours of the morning when even the birds were sleeping in were not given that luxury.

As with all sprint competitions the action was fast and furious with most swimmers opting for speed and flailing arms than style and grace through the water. Finally at the end of the day after all the stoke points had been counted it was four Truro swimmers that stood out on the podium, with 3 taking the top award in their individual age group -  Holly Abrahams took Gold (Girls 14 years AG), Luke Hollis - Gold (Boys 16 years AG), Josie Williams (Girls 16 years AG) and young Nicholas Laws (Boys 11 years AG) edged in to Silver.

For Josie Williams and Jack Middleton it was a case of swimming out the stiffness of the "Big Cornwall Swim" and they did excepitionally well considering!
